OBSERVATIONAL SERIES

'The theoretical framework for this inquiry looks towards issues regarding sustainability in fashion as they are articulated within our changing relations to materiality and the physical objects that surround us. My proposal being that reconnecting with the material of clothes, as both producers and consumers, points towards a slowing down of the accelerated cycles of consumption and obsolescence promoted by current fashion.'

'One of the main challenges consisted within incorporating sustainability in fashion is the demand for a radical re-thinking of systems of consumption, distribution, and production. So much so that the very topic of sustainable fashion can be in and of itself rather controversial and, in some sense oppositional to traditional modes of fashion. Working part-time in retail has provided me with an insight into the often-sinister side of fashion, which the consumer does not see, more specifically, how unwanted garments are treated, with an item of clothing considered unfit for sale resigned straight to landfill. ​What I was initially unaware of however, was how minor the majority of these faults were in actuality. A missing button, a loose seam: many of these defects could be resolved very easily with a small endowment of care and attention. This realization highlighted to me how we rarely participate in the actual craftsmanship of our garments today, preferring to outsource the labor involved to far flung countries. This comes in spite of the fact there was once a time where we used to make our clothes by hand, in our homes, beginning with the textiles themselves. Furthermore, how in the age of accelerated fashion, clothes are indeed easy to acquire; yet we are increasingly disconnected from the material in our lives.

 

The series of observational drawings depicting the defects and flaws within these fragments of clothing, seeks to elevate the subjects; all the while providing a poetic and critical observation on issues surrounding commerce. The sentimentality aroused by the depiction of something broken or inadequate serving to open a new narrative, encouraging the viewer to reflect on concerns surrounding the object in question. The suggestive ambiguity of the illustrations themselves, which due to the deliberate surrealist play with scale, requiring close inspection and analysis, endowing them a greater degree of focus and attention.'
