HER  FLOATING

PALACE

‘ In February 2019 I gained an insight into professional modes of practice through undertaking an internship placement alongside the House of Gharats, assisting in the creation of a series of silk scarfs. The role, which called for an illustrator and designer, provided me with valuable experience of working collaboratively amongst a design team, through the continued exchange of ideas and feedback to ensure a shared mutual vision was met. The central themes concerning ‘Her Floating Palace’ explore the world of Queen Elizabeth II and her life on-board her yacht the Royal Britannia. Drawing on notions of both home and freedom for one of the most powerful living monarchs, along with some British wit and imagination.'

'The research devised sought to gain insight into the Queen’s character behind closed doors, when in the presence of those she is closest to. Utilizing inspiration from sources detailing both the rituals and customs enacted on day-to-day basis, as well as the favored pass-times and leisurely activities enjoyed by the royal family. The scarf’s design illustrates a number of nautical emblems, including a knot, a compass and an anchor, all of which have their own meaning: symbolizing connection, family and stability. Whilst the home comforts and symbols of British culture evoke the sense of intimacy the Queen feels upon her secluded ‘country house at sea’ where she can truly relax during life away from the monarchy.’
